The full effect of the Disability Discrimination Act
1995 (DDA) came into effect in October 2004, and all
businesses now have to comply or have a reasonable action
plan for compliance.
The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 and 2005 (DDA),
the revision of part M of the Building Regulations and
the British Standard, BS8300:2001, are contributing
to growing interest in the accessibility of the built
environment. Access audits are now identified in the
code of practice for part 3 of the DDA as the best tool
for the planned improvement of services and premises.
Every business that provides a service to the public,
has a duty under the DDA to consider the requirements
of the disabled community and to make reasonable adjustments
where it is justified to do so – As this is very
prominent within the healthcare environment we have
a full time DDA auditor.
We believe that access improvements should take into
account a wide range of environmental needs and not
be limited to specific types of disability. With this
broad approach we aim to promote the provision of environments
that are safe, convenient and enjoyable for use by everyone.
We can assure the client our recommendations will be
workable, sensible and take due consideration of the
architectural merit of the properties involved. When
looking at existing buildings we will assess the current
situation and will seek to identify future problems
and set our advice within a strategic framework. This
is particularly valuable to clients seeking to meet
their duties under the DDA.
